WeChat is the most impactful social media application in the everyday lives of Chinese citizens today. On the basis of qualitative interviews with Chinese students abroad, this paper discusses various aspects of WeChat group communication, such as social noise, muting and group composition. The theoretical basis is a human-centric approach to ICT adoption, with the understanding that the usage of technology is deeply intertwined with culture, values and everyday social behaviour. Therefore, the body of the discussion takes Chinese cultural concepts such as guanxi (network) and mianzi (face) into account. As a result, a culturally sensitive model of functional and dysfunctional aspects of WeChat communication is developed, connecting the ICT adoption process with Chinese cultural concepts.
