The article presents images and visual representations of the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s, drawn from Ruy Castro’s book Metrópole à Beira-Mar: o Rio moderno dos anos 20. The topical selections are integral to the methodology. This is an initial and exploratory approach, part of a main research project. The selections featured here will later be deployed in a discourse analysis to decode the human cartography that relationships between city and literature can generate. The defining historical event is the “Exhibition of the Centenary of Independence of 1922” in Rio de Janeiro. The images mediated by Castro are a key component of recreating the Modern Rio of the 1920s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
