The chapter deals with the success of Gary Gygax and a group of small hobbyists in the video game industry. They invented a game that has no winners or losers and often has no definable ending point. The concept behind Dungeons & Dragons proved so original and fascinating that it launched a whole new genre of games known as role-playing games, or RPG. Gygax was fascinated by the detail and historical accuracy of war games. He and a friend, Don Kaye, pooled their meager resources and came up with $1,000 to form a company called TSR Hobbies Inc. The company posted a profit of over $4 million on sales of $16.4 million in 1981. Gygax lost control of the company's operations after the board decided to reorganize. |
