Not all of the chapters discuss the region in general, but even when focused on certain people or places, those chapters promote insight into how people lived in, and related to, the nineteenth-century Midwest. So, I The Making of the Midwest i not only explores many components of midwestern identity, from the passage of the Northwest Ordinance in 1787 to the later nineteenth century, when the Midwest was a settled and thoroughly formed region.
