This article profiles several women who emerged leaders in the Southeast Asia region. Born in 1933 in the Philippines, Corazon Aquino spent much of her adult life fulfilling the role of mother and wife. Few would have guessed that this woman would one day overthrow a powerful dictator, become president of the Philippines, survive numerous coup attempts, and help to restore order and hope to an ailing country. Unfortunately, many of the gains that President Aquino was able to make were undone by the presidents who followed her. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is the president of the Philippines since 2001. She is the second woman to be brought into this position by the People Power Revolution, and she too is trying to restore the order and stability that President Aquino strove for. |
