Dr Michael Bailey and Peter Davidson have successfully applied their research archaeology approach to a classic early locomotive, known by many and understood by less, and produced an interesting, readable and authoritative account, backed up by full sources, bibliography and references. It is thus a pleasure to review the latest published report of their work, covering the 1830 Robert Stephenson and Company locomotive I Invicta i built for the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway. It also notes the locomotive's place in the development of steam technology and addresses the alterations to the machine in the light of the poor financial position of the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway in the mid-1830s.
