After shortly reviewing the current theories on peer groups, the author presents the results of a survey on adolescents, which demonstrate the relevant role of peer group in socialization. These results are connected with the deep crisis of traditional agencies (school and family). The peer group acts mainly in the expressive area. It seems however to play an important role in the transition from "traditional" to "emergent" values and is of relevant influence in determinating both social image and political choices of adolescents.
