Abstrakt: The article discusses various issues related to the actual treatment process of schizophrenia. The individuals and families under consideration are primarily those in whom schizophrenic symptoms occur in recurring cycles. Three major issues that are basic to effective treatment, namely the management of relationship factors, dynamic enhancement of ego coping in individual and group treatment and the reorientation to process factors in family work, are discussed. The most important area with which schizophrenic clients have difficulty is the management of affects. Workers in reorientation program also need to help to reduce fears and distortions which could curtail outside relationships. Communications theorists assert that the question in schizophrenia is how to deal with patient's family. The article author feels that the systems-communications literature on treatment techniques with parental families is impressive. Theorists say that schizophrenic behavior of an identified patient living with his parents is in some way required by current family interaction patterns. Ego psychology and the systems communications approaches to understanding schizophrenia can clarify overall treatment planning and core treatment issues with this client group.
