The conventional watchdog-based blackhole attack mitigation approaches require that all nodes in the network run in the promiscuous mode and result into the increased overhead. In this article, we improve the efficacy of mitigating the blackhole attacks in the RPL (Routing Protocol for Power and Lossy Networks). We analyze two approaches, viz. SIEWE (Strainer based Intrusion Detection of Blackhole in 6LoWPAN for the Internet of Things) and T-SIEWE (Trust and Strainer based Intrusion Detection of Blackhole in 6LoWPAN for the Internet of Things). SIEWE and T-SIEWE are based on statistically limiting the number of nodes in the network to be monitored – by identifying and filtering out the suspicious nodes. Our experimental evaluation and analysis show that as compared to other watchdog-based approaches and as compared to SIEWE, T-SIEWE optimally improves the packet delivery ratio of the system and accurately detects the Blackhole attack while entailing lesser memory and energy overhead.
