The article focuses on the problem of racism by analyzing attitudes of Black and White individuals. From the psychological standpoint, racism is expressed in a number of related attitudes whereby white individuals attempt to promote their own psychic security through an assumed superiority to members of other groups. Racism is thus not only a means by which white people maintain a very real environmental advantage but also a mechanism for attempting to maintain a psychological advantage. Racist attitudes in individuals both arise from and contribute to racist institutions. In the treatment situation, the caseworker sees the ways in which the social pathology is interwoven with individual psychopathology. Racism arises when racial identity is seen and used as a mark of superiority or inferiority inherent in a person by reason of his racial group membership. Racism ranges from overt white supremacist attitudes to various covert attitudes, including unconscious fantasies about imagined racial characteristics. |
