Abstrakt: This article presents news briefs related to education in the U.S. as of October 1999. Education Update, the newsletter of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, recently contained a cover story on the status and quality of communication education in K-12 schools throughout the country. Michigan State University, funded by a National Science Foundation grant, is building the largest collection of historical audio recordings ever available on the Internet. Advice for being a successful part-time instructor is available in The Adjunct Professor's Guide to Success: Surviving and Thriving in the College Classroom. In 1999, congressional spending on pork barrel projects that benefit specific universities and colleges reached the highest dollar ever. A group of 51 college presidents have called for campuses to examine their commitment to civic responsibility and to become more deeply involved in their communities. Three higher education associations have joined forces to create the Alliance for Equity in Higher Education, a group to lobby for colleges that specifically serve the growing minority population in the U.S. State lawmakers will increasingly judge colleges and universities by the quality of their teacher-preparation programs, according to higher education leaders at the annual conference of the Education Commission of the States.
