Abstrakt: This article presents an update on trends, issues and information resources related to the U.S. higher education as of November 1999. Nearly a third of the nation's full-time faculty members are 55 or older, compared with about a quarter of them a decade ago, according to the American College Teacher, a report released by the Higher Education Research Institute of the University of California in Los Angeles. The report also found that keeping up with technology is a major source of stress for college faculty, surpassing traditional stress producers such as research and publishing demands, teaching loads and the review and promotion process. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Education is awarding $135 million in grants to train teachers to use technology in the classroom. The grants will support efforts to improve teacher training by consortia involving colleges, state agencies, school districts and non-profit organizations. In another report, the Web site of "The Chronicle of Higher Education" includes a publicly accessible section that describes Web sites of interest to people in higher education. There is now a category for communication and the National Communication Association is listed as a site of interest.
