This article focuses on the status of speech communication education in the general education requirements of various academic institutions. In a survey of a community college, comprehensive college, and university speech communication departments and programs, it was revealed that 79 percent of those institutions have one or more communication courses included in their institutions's general education or universal requirements. Details of the number and percentage of schools responding yes by category to the question "Does your department/unit have one or more course(s) included in your institution's General Education/Universal requirements?" was provided. The study, conducted by Speech Communication Association (SCA) staff members Roy Berko and Megan Brooks, surveyed 384 institutions randomly selected from the SCA departmental membership list. Of the 216 replies received, 212 were usable. |
