The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of symptoms suggestive of physical exercise addiction in people aged 50 or over living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Two-hundred and thirty-three practitioners of physical exercise aged between 50 and 89 (average = 63.5; standard deviation = 9.7) participated in this study. The Negative Addiction Scale was used to determine behavior suggestive of addiction. The prevalence of symptoms suggestive of exercise addiction among the participants was 46.4%. The factors associated with the suggestive symptoms were high BMI, low education level, body aesthetics as the main reason for performing exercise, aqua aerobics practice, the use of dietary supplements, and interest in TV programs that deal with body shape and health. We concluded that exercise addiction among people over 50 is more associated with an attempt to have a beautiful body. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
