The article focuses on Australia's swimmer Brooke Hanson, who won five individual gold medals at the recent World championships on October 7-11, 2004, Indianapolis, Indiana,--something no other swimmer on the would's stage has ever done. Brooke Hanson returned to Australia from Athens last August sporting two Olympic medals and a million-dollar smile fit to send marketers and merchandisers into a spin, she found herself posing for snapshots at the Sydney airport with a prime minister who was working the campaign trail for all it was worth. Had it not been for the U.S.--which thrilled a home crowd with 21 titles among its 41 medals--Hanson would have topped the medals chart, too. Given the five individual golds, Brooke's blast bettered all of the legendary performers who came before her, an achievement only marginally dented by the absence of the best possible fields in Indianapolis. |
