Abstrakt: Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between type of impairment and oral anomalies in individuals with special needs. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Consenting individuals with special needs were enrolled from 4 schools located in Islamabad. This generated a total sample size of 443. All participants underwent a through oral clinical examination and record of their oral anomalies under four distinct headings was made as dental, skeletal, mucosal and other defects. The results were recorded and analyzed through SPSS, version 20 and Microsoft Word Excel. Results: From 443 individuals 342 (77%) were males while 101 (23%) were females. There were 129 individuals with hearing impairment and 115 with physical impairment. 110 intellectually challenged and 89 individuals with visual impairment were also recorded. Among different categories of oral anomalies dental defects were 83 (19%) in number, skeletal were 102 (23%), mucosal were 77 (17%) and 59 (13%) were "other defects". A clinically significant correlation was noted between physical, intellectually challenged, visual impairments and dental defects (p<0.05). With regard to mucosal defects, they showed statistically significant association with both intellectual and visual impairment having p value of <0.001 and 0.008, respectively. A statistically significant association was also noted between skeletal defects and intellectual impairment (p value 0.04) by Pearson's chi square analysis. Other defects showed statistically significant association with visual impairment only with p value of 0.002. Conclusion: A statistically significant correlation was noted between intellectually disabled, physically impaired, visual difficulties and dental defects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
