Abstrakt: Aim: This study aims to identify the aetiology and patterns of maxillofacial injuries seen in a rural government dental clinic in Pahang, Malaysia. Methodology: Cross-sectional study was conducted with retrospective clinical dental record review of all patients sustained maxillofacial injuries at Klinik Pergigian Rompin, Kuala Rompin, Pahang. Convenience sampling was done from the year 2016 until 2018. Data on demographics, aetiology, types, anatomical location of injury and their emergency management were reviewed. Data on type of collision, involvement and usage of safety gear were reviewed for subjects involved in motor vehicle accidents (MVA). Results: 153 subjects sustained maxillofacial injuries, with 77.1% were men, and Malays had the highest involvement (79.1%). Subjects were distributed between 1-75 years old, with a median of 18 years. Toddlers most commonly sustained maxillofacial injuries (19.0%), followed by middle-aged adults (18.6%). The most common aetiology was MVA (56.2%). Soft-tissue injury was the most common type of injury (58.8%) while 59.4% sustained injuries at the middle third of the face. Among subjects involved in MVA, 60.5% had a collision with other vehicle or object and 81.4% of them are riders. There was a statistically significant association between involvement of subjects in MVA and usage of safety gears (p=0.016). 85% were manageable by general dental practitioners in the primary clinical setting, with 76.5% had soft tissue management. Conclusion: MVA is the primary aetiology of maxillofacial injuries in Kuala Rompin with soft tissue injury and middle third of the face being the most common type and anatomical location involved.
