The article presents information on skin testing in allergy. Skin tests are used, in addition to a directed history and physical exam, to exclude or confirm immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated diseases such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, and anaphylaxis to aeroallergens, foods, insect venoms, and certain drugs. Skin testing attempts to detect the presence of allergen-specific IgE bound to mast cells by eliciting mast cell degranulation to the specific allergen being tested. Skin testing is a convenient, practical, and reliable method of establishing IgE-mediated disease. |
