Abstrakt: Current literature indicates that participatory research has emerged as one of the major research approaches in health. This paper examines the practice of participatory research in primary care, health promotion and public health. It focuses on strategies and interventions employed by practitioners that demonstrate the core elements and principles of participatory research. The key themes generated from issues and problems experienced by practitioners are: achieving authentic participation, sharing power between professional researchers and community members, building trust and relationships among research participants, resolving ethical dilemmas, and ensuring sustainability of research outcomes in the community. Areas for further research on the key themes are also suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
