The article discusses the over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) in general, its current implications and related issues. OTHR is an application of radar technology that exploits the phenomenon of electromagnetic wave reflection by the earth's ionosphere to allow radar operation beyond the local horizon. The actual operating range of an OTHR system depends on the frequency used within the band for which ionospheric reflection is significant. The main difficulties in realizing OTHR have been the generation of suitably stable signals and computing power sufficient to attack what is a highly intensive signal processing task. |
