Abstrakt: Bigu is a comprehensive health care technique based on the Chinese traditional health preservation method, including fasting, Qigong, and the Chinese medicine. The present study was to explore the efficacy and feasibility of a 7-day combination intervention of calorie restriction and Qigong exercise on selected outcome measures among individuals with central obesity. Twenty-three subjects(11 male and 12 female) with central obesity were enrolled in the comprehensive 7-day intervention. The outcome measures were body weight, waist circumference, body mass index(BMI), body composition, physiological and biochemical parameters before and after the intervention. The paired test was employed to examine the differences in the outcome measures before and after the intervention. After the comprehensive intervention, the body weight, BMI, waist circumference, and body fat of the subjects were significantly decreased(P<0.01). However, the skeletal muscle and fat-free body weight were significantly decreased(P<0.05). The heart rate, blood pressure, triglyceride, and total cholesterol remained no change, but the blood glucose dropped significantly within the normal physiological range(P<0.01). It could be concluded that the calorie restriction combined with Qigong exercise might effectively help individuals with obesity to relieve obesity and control body weight and could be a feasible therapy. However, there might be a risk of losing fat-free body weight during intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
