Abstrakt: | The historical turmoil of 1918-1920 resulted in the dissolution of the Kingdom of Hungary; the transfer of sovereignty in Felvidék ("Upper Hungary") at the end of this period brought fundamental changes in the societies and politics of Hungary and its neighbouring states. This study focuses on the region around the town of Érsekújvár/Nové Zamky during the events of 1918-1919. Archival sources used in the study do not corroborate the dominant claim in Hungarian historiography that Hungarians in Felvidék were not prepared for resistance against the Czechoslovak Army because Czech intentions to overtake the region were unexpected. The case of Érsekújvár/Nové Zamky is important both from the aspect of local resistance and the opportunities to hold back Czechoslovak forces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
