The article focuses on the search for usable definition of news for the classroom. It has been suggested that news related to women, wampum and wrongdoing are no longer relevant. Different people have different interpretations of what the news must constitute. There is a lack of consistency which becomes immediately obvious in the textbook writers' lists of news characteristics or news values. News is made up of facts, but not every fact is news. News is usually about people, but not every person is newsworthy. News is an account of what is happening in the world, but only a tiny fraction of any day's events is ever reported. |
