The article discusses opportunities offered by charge-coupled device (CCD) scanners to value added resellers. When CCD technology emerged in the early 1990s, the scanners could only read bar codes from less than one inch away and had trouble scanning any surface that was not flat. CCD technology now can read bar codes on a variety of surfaces. Resellers can market CCD scanners to end users such as trucking firms and warehouses that need scanners to withstand bumps and drops. CCD technology also enables resellers to offer a lower-cost option to laser scanners. Due to the lower cost, durability and improved reading capacity of CCD scanners, it makes sense for resellers to offer CCD as an option for end users. Area imaging scanners represent a major opportunity for resellers. Are imaging, which uses digital camera technology to read two-dimensional bar codes and linear bar codes, enables users to take pictures and capture signatures. By obtaining expertise in area imaging, they can sell to businesses that are automating routes and need scanners to capture signature and take picture of parcels. The healthcare sector is the fastest growing vertical or scanners. Hospitals also are using bar codes to monitor patients throughout their stay and to track expensive medical equipment. |
