Abstrakt: The State of Missouri v. Darren Wilson case instigated the public's response to a conflict between law enforcement and the black community. The focus of the current study was on the public's reaction to news media coverage of a case involving existing social and institutional tensions between law enforcement and the black community in the greater Saint Louis area. Through an instrumental case study approach, Facebook-enabled comment sections in online newspapers were examined. Results suggested that the public's target of blame evolved in The State of Missouri v. Darren Wilson as key events unfolded. Furthermore, the evolution of placing blame may have distracted from addressing underlying issues of systemic racism as the overall discussion of race decreased over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
