The selected documents relate to the protest of the Bulgarian Workers’ Party (BWP) (k) and the youth structures of the Workers Youth League (WYL) and the Bulgarian Common National Student Union (BCNSU) against the modest celebration of 24th May in 1942 – the Day of Slavonic Literature and the Slavic enlighteners – the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius (in these documents they are not mentioned as saints). The main opponent specified in appeals was the Bulgarian government of Bogdan Filov, on whose initiative the celebration was delimited in narrower frames. According to the authors of these appeals the main reason for this was the commitment of the governing circles with Nazi Germany. Through highlighting the life-work of St. St. Cyril and Methodius, dedicated to the development of Bulgarian literacy and culture, the appeals were used as an instrument of rejecting the cooperation between Bulgaria and Hitler, who regarded the Slavs as “a manure for the Aryan race”. These were the reasons for the appeals for all-Slavic union against the German enslavers. The important role of USSR for the Slavic world was also acknowledged, Czechs, Poles, Serbs and etc., who suffered from the “fascist yoke”, were also not omitted. In the opinion of the authors of these appeals, the celebration of the Day of Slavic Enlighteners should become a demonstration contra the involvement of Bulgarian army in military actions against the Slav brothers. Confidence of the recent rout of Germany as a result of the resistance of the Slavic nations was also expressed in the documents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
