This paper describes and analyzes the role of extra-community resources in supporting the responses of organizations of urban squatters to threatened removal and relocation from areas to be used for large infrastructure projects. The six Southeast Asian cities of Bangkok, Manila, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur were studies for cases of habitat defense. The paper concludes that the support of extra-community sources of support is crucial for the initiation and continued mobilization of squatter organizations. The availability of such resources, however, depends largely upon whether the political elites are unified or disunified, and whether as a consequence, national and international sources of support for squatter organizations are allowed to operate within the society. |
