To expand worker capabilities, knowledge-based systems (KBS) have been introduced to aid the decision-making activities performed by shop floor personnel. With this introduction, increased concern has been expressed regarding effective and efficient utilization of resources when applying KBS technology. This article describes the development and testing of a theoretically based methodology to identity task domains where KBS technology will yield the highest gains in performance. Results indicate the described technique is capable of discriminating between application domains regarding their suitability for KBS implementation.
