The article discusses the development of connoisseurship in the Netherlands in 18th century with regard to the demand for luxury goods like the porcelain designed by Dutch artist Cornelis Pronk. Topics include the efforts of Dutch East India Company (VOC) to market Pronk porcelain by making it in China and Japan; combination of elements derived from both Dutch and Chinese art in Pronk's designs; and the identification of liefhebbers or art experts as the target consumers by the VOC. |
