Abstrakt: Previous research on educational inequality has mainly focused on the differences in average educational attainment and its effects on social economic status on average. However, with the expansion of higher education and increasing inequality in the upper tail, the quality of education is becoming more relevant for scientific research. This article argues that educational inequality is stratified in a meritocratic selection. Inequality is different in educations of different qualities due to differences in distributions of abilities between social groups. Using an administrative dataset of National College Entrance Exam from a Chinese province in 2014, this article provides a framework to analyze stratified ethnic inequality. In particular, this article discusses the effect of affimative policies in admitting minorities and contributes to existing literature on ethnic inequality which has not been able to isolate the effect of such policies in China.
