Abstrakt: Taking the perspective of legal history, the contribution examines the minority clauses of the Treaty of St. Germain. While President Wilson was unsuccessful in including the protection of minority rights in the Covenant of the League of Nations, the rights were guaranteed on an individual basis. Modelled after the Minority Treaty wrought from Poland, signed on June 28th, 1919, the clauses regarding the protection of minorities were adapted with a few modifications in the Treaty of St. Germain. They provided constitutional and international guarantees, provisions regarding religious protection, guarantees of equality and non-discrimination as well as rights of citizenship, the violation of those guarantees leading to a series of complaints before the League of Nations. As other states thus obligated to the protection of minorities, Austria maintained a reserved position. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
