We can follow the academic career of Giacchino Volpe through the story of his recruitment, from the first test, that dates back to 1899 to the achievement of the title of professor. Besides, we investigate the development of his relationship and then the breakdown with his master, Amedeo Crivellucci, as well as with his friend Gaetano Salvemini, who was his competitor on a couple of occasions. The research was carried out in the light of disagreements derived from their changing relationships. At the same time, we investigate the consequences of these connections, once marred, on the end of the review «Studi storici» and on the first steps of the emerging «Nuova Rivista Storica».
