The study discusses the political-institutional trajectory of the Portuguese-African Society of Rio de Janeiro, through the vehicle of its bulletins (1931-1939) and other publications (books, consular documents and letters). This was the only Society dedicated exclusively to the diffusion of colonial propaganda, and was managed by Republicans who emigrated or were exiled to Brazil. The Society enjoyed the support of corresponding members drawn from all the Portuguese colonies. The study focuses first on the Society's emergence, statutes and members. Then it proceeds to an analysis of the organizations two existential phases: from veiled criticism and the construction of a "Panlusitan" unity project (1930-1934) to the subsequent institutional crisis and persecution during its last years (1935-1939).
