Abstrakt: Some unpublished letters from Prince Paolo Savelli in Rome to his brother Federico in Ferrara have come to light. The Prince writes of a Musician Angel attributed to Titian. The painting in question today hangs in the Galleria Boria Pamphilj. From the letters it's been possible to track down where it came from and how it was paid for. It originally hung in the church of Santa Maria dei Servi in Ferrara. From there it spent about forty years in the Savelli collection. A wax seal on the back carries the Savelli family crest. The discovery of its original whereabouts and subsequent movements, as well as the critical opinion of its private owner Paolo Savelli, shed fresh light on its traditional attribution to Titian. It's possible that its conception can be brought forward to at least 1605-1608. The letters add another important piece to the jigsaw of Emilian and Venetian paintings brought to Rome in the years following the Revolution of Ferrara. They join an already rich archive which has proved ideal for a reconstruction of the history of collecting and conservation during the second decade of the seventeenth century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
