Abstrakt: This study examined the association of spousal violence and children's academic performance of the secondary school, using some selected secondary schools in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. Data were collected using a pre-tested questionnaire after obtaining permission from the school management and verbal consent from the pupils after they had been addressed. One hundred and fifty three (153) pupils with a mean age of 12 years were used for the study with a preponderance of male pupils 64.9%. The result shows that majority of the pupils 70.6% reported that they have seen their parents quarrel while 31.4% have seen them fight. 86.3% of the children from homes with spousal abuse fear for their lives when these quarrels and fights go on, while 29.4% are usually reluctant to return home from school. Pupils from home with spousal abuse were 12 times more likely to be afraid, than the children from normal homes a significant difference between them. x²=11.123 P<0.05 while they were 0.25 times less likely to return home after school hours with a significant difference x²=14.280, P<0.05 low. Concerning academic performance, the children who observe quarrels were more likely to perform poorly, but the difference was not significant. However, the children who observed fighting were performing more poorly with than children from normal home with much significant difference (x²=3.723, P<0.05).We recommend that when abusive situation are detected, attention should not only be on the abused parent.
