Retention and post-treatment stability are among the most difficult challenges facing orthodontists. Many variables are involved, including changes in archform, continuing growth, environmental and neuromuscular factors, etiology of malocclusion, developing third molars, periodontal and gingival tissues, and post-treatment tooth positions. One systematic review found insufficient evidence on which to base a definitive retention protocol, although overcorrection of rotations, judicious tooth removal, and root paralleling played important roles in maintaining treatment results.
