Abstrakt:	The article examines the search and construction of identity by Albert Helman, a Surinamese author, politician and resistance fighter, in three of his works "South-South-West," "The End of the Map," and "Chieftains of the Oayapok!." Topics covered include nostalgic emotions towards the native land in "South-South-West," collision of civilisation and wilderness in "The End of the Map," and his struggle between primitivity and civilisation in "Chieftains."
