Abstrakt: The aim of this article is to describe the Russian Orthodox Church's motives and theological reasoning during the religious freedom discussion before the Russian 1997 Law on Freedom of Conscience and Religious Associations. The 1997 law set a new standard for religious freedom in Russia and established a special position for the Russian Orthodox Church compared to other religions and religious movements. The 1997 law was definitely a watershed in Russian society, and it includes tension between equality and inequality between religions. In the article I will analyze how and to what degree did the ROC support and justify the equality and inequality between religions before the 1997 law? To what degree was religious freedom understood as an indispensable part of human rights in the argumentation presented by the ROC? What kind of theological reasoning was given for the Church's understanding of religious freedom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
