Abstrakt: Symbolic analysis is described and used to show that the reduced Navier-Stokes equations are parabolic due to the convection-diffusion interaction, but are elliptic due to the interaction between the pressure field and the continuity equation. It is demonstrated that the introduction of a transverse pressure gradient term into the streamwise momentum equation will render the complete system non-elliptic and amenable to solution via a single spatial march in the streamwise direction.
