The article explores the use of sound effects in "Insufficient Direction," an autobiographical josei manga about Anno Moyoco's life with her husband, director Anno Hideaki, and their otaku lifestyle. It examines the couple's use of giongo, or onomatopoeia, and gitaigo, or mimetic words describing action or emotion, to remember their favorite anime, manga and films. It also analyzes how the connection to memory in the josei manga is rooted in earlier forms of Japanese art, primarily haiku. |
