Abstrakt: Saying goodbye to Gump's: Whether you're a big spender or a big dreamer, the news that Gump's has declared bankruptcy after 157 years and is planning on closing by the end of the year has saddened San Franciscans of a certain age. From its roots as a purveyor of exotic and luxury goods to its more recent forays into puppies and kittens (during the holidays; it started the SPCA partnership in 1987) and apparel have given it an outsize presence in the world of retail. "Decades of discriminating brides have registered for Robbe & Berking or Christofle sterling silverware and Wedgwood dinnerware. And then returned for ceramics, artwork, outdoor statuary, rugs and furniture," we wrote last year, when we named it one of S.F.'s top 10 heritage retailers. For others, it was simply a place to browse its unique, varied fragrance and candle holdings or buy that special Christmas ornament. The store is offering 20 to 40 percent off the entire inventory at the store (135 Post St.) and online at www.gumps.com through the end of this month. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
