This study presents new considerations on the sepulchral monuments of the Cappella dei Confessori (or Bardi di Vernio) in the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence. Commissioned by the Bardi family, the monuments were decorated with frescoes by Maso di Banco and Taddeo Gaddi. An analysis of the omnipresent heraldic symbols in the chapel and the discovery and the reconsideration of several documents, together with a careful reconstruction of the execution chronology of the work, lead the author to propose that the two monuments represent collective family cenotaphs, one reserved for the inale, the other for the female members of the Bardi di Mangona, the commissioning branch of the family. The re-interpretation of historical events surrounding the dispute between the Florentine municipality, the Bardi di Mangona and Maso di Banco, together with a clarification of the execution chronology of the chapel and its decoration (frescoes and sculpture) based on archival sources and direct analysis, are fundamental to the revised dating advanced in the article.
