Abstrakt: The traditional Chinese opera originated from time immemorial and has become a complex art form which comprises music, dance, literature, drama and so on. During its long development, the traditional Chinese opera has made numerous outward journeys around the world. Some of the trips are tortuous, while others turn out easy and pleasant. This paper examines the overseas reception of such traditional Chinese operas as The Little Orphan of the Family Chao: A Chinese Tragedy and Lady Precious Stream. To this end, it presents a 300-year historical survey of the introduction of Chinese operas to the West, analyzing the motivation of the translation, the adaptation of the original operas, the reception of the plays and other aspects. The paper concludes with a call for paying more scholarly attention to this phenomenon as a way of promoting China's cultural exchanges with the outside world. In order to facilitate the "go-global" strategy, we should develop the right cultural awareness and practice a flexible and varied way of introducing Chinese traditional operas to the West.
