Abstrakt: This article is an excerpt about the observations on the Modoc War, which appeared in the June 1873 issue of the Army and Navy Journal. When U.S. troops arrived on the field, they found their other members engaged in a war with a band of Indian outlaws, murderers, and wards of the government who had revolted against its authority. Both groups were fighting mercilessly, neither giving nor exacting quarter. The troops then thought that captives taken in the future should be executed on the spot, as a sure and speedy method of settling the problem with Modoc Indians.
