Abstrakt: Asset-based community development (ABCD) was used in the context of community-engaged research to establish a university-assisted component of the Malawi Children's Mission (MCM). The MCM provides primary education, health care, and emotional support services to 150 orphaned children and their guardians from three rural villages affected by profound economic hardship and loss. Interviews and group meetings with community members, village chiefs, and MCM staff supported engagement and informed strategies for identifying and mobilizing community assets. Three themes emerged in the analysis and are discussed in the context of creating partnerships for development: (1) trauma, loss, and the impact on the families and community; (2) entrepreneurship; and (3) issues of trust with international visitors and outside organizations.
