Data shows that 28,729 incidents of domestic abuse were reported to Wisconsin law enforcement agencies in 2012, and the problem is not abating, in 2016, the most recent year for which statistics are available, 73 people lost their lives in domestic violencerelated homicide cases in Wisconsin. The frequency of domestic abuse and violence is an issue for lawyers in nearly all practice areas, not just criminal and family law, because domestic abuse survivors may seek representation in many types of cases in which the abusive power and control dynamic has a direct effect. Lawyers must be prepared to attend to the needs of clients who have experienced domestic abuse or are currently in threatening situations. Safety comes first; also important are directing clients to social service agencies at which some of their nonlegal needs can be met and taking time to engage in self-care so the lawyer has sufficient resources to provide effective representation.
