Abstrakt: In the historiography of the early Frankfurt School, Andreis Sternheim is hardly mentioned. Nevertheless, in the period of 'inderdisciplinary materialism' (1931-1937) he played an active part in its research programme. He was involved in the project 'Autorität mad Familie' and the study of leisure. Sternheim was deeply rooted in the labour movement. He was a former diamond cutter. Since 1920 he had been head of the documentation department of the IFTU, the International Federation of Trade Unions. He was a marxist who underlined the relevance of cultural factors and the quality of labour. Within the Institut he warned against an uncritical use of psychoanalysis within social sciences. His view on the independent role of politics and the importance of liberal rights brought him into conflict with the concept of 'critical theory' that Horkheimer and Marcuse formulated and with which they dissociated themselves from the labour movement.
