Patients presenting in emergency departments trust that their personal clinical information will be treated in a confidential manner, and recent patient privacy legislation has made this expectations not only ethically desirable, but legally binding. Yet, the- architecture of many emergency departments often allows critical personal information to be overheard by bystanders.
