A retinal detachment is a medical emergency that requires immediate surgery. When the retina separates from its blood supply vision is lost in that area. Surgery is the only effective treatment. If a tear or hole is repaired before the retina pulls apart or if a detachment is treated before the macula comes loose, vision can usually be saved. One of the tools eye doctors use to help diagnose macular degeneration is the Amsler Grid. People with degenerative diseases can also use it to check their vision at home. Macular degeneration is often associated with the aging process. Most forms of early-onset macular degeneration are thought to be genetic. |
