The article focuses on the role of thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) gene on the clinical outcome of the treatment of autoimmune disease among adults through azathioprine. Topics discussed include the significant of TPMT on improving the safety of azathioprine, the risk of mild to moderate myelosuppression associated with heterozygous TPMT deficiency, and the importance of considering the proper TPMT genotyping in using azathioprine. |
